Ariel Horton

Ariel Horton is a wife, mom and first grade teacher in Prince George's County, Maryland. She is also the owner of AFTER 8 Apparel on ETSY and co-owner of the franchise Overtime Athletics in Anne Arundel County. Ariel graduated from Howard University with her bachelors of English in 2011 and Masters of Education in 2012. As a kid, Ariel dreamed of changing the world as a singer-songwriter, nun and ice-skater. Now she gets to change the world by empowering the future world changers. When she's not teaching, doing mama-stuff, or creating t-shirt designs, you can most likely find her drinking coffee on her front porch, shopping small to support other momprenuers on ETSY.

Where did the name of your brand come from?

My son's bedtime is 8, so any work or dream that I want to pursue outside of my mommy duties has to be done after 8:00pm.

What is one characteristic you believe every leader should possess?

With-it-ness.  A leader needs to be present, accessible and plugged in concerning all aspects of the team she leads. Whether it's making sure her team has the resources to execute responsibilities or asking how a member's heart is feeling, having her finger on the pulse of the organization she leads, is essential to building and maintaining a healthy business.

What is one of the biggest challenges you believe women in leadership face?

One of the biggest challenges I've faced is the seduction to try to "have it all".  I've found that if I make God and my family my priority, I'm able to execute my other responsibilities well. I know that I can't give everything 100% all the time. The key is balance and margin.

Can you share a defining moment in your role as the founder of your brand?

Buzzfeed featured my shirt "Black Boy Joy" in an article entitled "18 Tees for when You're Proud AF of Who You Are" . I had no idea that I was being featured. It was a total surprise! This was huge for me because I realized that God is the best PR I could ever have. It was then that I realized that the most important thing I can do for my business is submit it to God.
